Choosing your first digital FM transmitter can become very confusing. You start seeing all the different units, with some talking about having a dock connector, and others just having a 3mm stereo plug. You stare at your screen or at the store shelves scratching your head. Is a dock connector important or not?

Not only are you enjoying your music while flying down the road, you will have a fully charged iPod or iPhone when you reach your destination. You will not need to carry both an FM transmitter and a car charger. You can use an FM transmitter with just the stereo plug, buy why? You will be losing one of the big benefits.

Now, if you are using another companies MP3 player, your choices for a digital FM transmitter shrink rapidly. A dock connector is going to be useless. Most of these MP3 players do all of their connections to your PC and their recharging through a USB connector. If you wish to recharge your MP3 player on the fly, you will still need to invest in a separate auto charger. This is one more area where Apple seems to have out maneuvered the competition. The options for a single unit digital FM transmitter is very attractive.
One other item most people overlook while selecting their FM transmitter is the display system. At a minimum, you want a very clear LED indicator setup. Some units even include a small LCD screen to show you the exact frequency you are using. The LED’s are commonly used to show you if power is on, or if the batteries are getting low on power.
Is a dock connector the most important factor in choosing your system? It definitely should be if your are using an Apple iPod or iPhone. You want to get every benefit possible, and since the cost is virtually the same you should choose wisely. You will negate the need for having a second cord dangling around in the car for recharging your Apple device.
